ロンドンで、連続自殺事件が発生します。警察は自殺と断定しますが、シャーロックは殺人事件だと直感し、犯人を追跡します。

アフガニスタンから帰還した医師のジョン・ワトソンは、収入が少ないため、ロンドンで同居人(flatmate)を探していました。ちょうど出会った旧友が、同居人としてシャーロックを紹介します。ワトソンがシャーロックのもとを訪ねると、シャーロックは何も言わないのに、ワトソンが同居人になりたいと思っていることをすばやく見抜きました。
